New Podcast: The Michael Stets Show

New Podcast: The Michael Stets Show

As many of you may have noticed already via social media, I’ve launched my new podcast: The Michael Stets Show. It’s something I probably should’ve done a while ago, but here we are. I’m super excited about it and plan on putting out plenty of content in the coming weeks as I get rolling.

Things have been really odd for me lately in regards to my career, especially since I was let go from SiriusXM Fight Nation on January 10. As you can imagine, after working there since 2015, it was a really rough day for me. Even though I was a part-time/fill-in host, I had always envisioned growing with the channel and gaining more opportunity there. But, alas, that was not to be.

And things became even more difficult with the realization that for the first time since 2011, I didn’t have an outlet to write or talk about combat sports. As for writing, I was penning freelance articles for Fightsports.tv during the last year, but that work dried up rather quickly, with my last article, a story on GLORY kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven, being published back in September.

I’ve been sorting through my feelings quite a bit the last week or so, and while I wasn’t working my board operator shifts at WJR, looking for new work, or driving my wife Lauren crazy while pacing the house, getting the ax from SiriusXM served as extra motivation to start the new podcast. On Friday night around 11pm or so, I forced myself to head into the studio at WJR to record the first episode and I’m so glad that I did. I’m going to put them out as often as I can, and I plan on talking about different topics aside from face punching and football. I’m definitely going to tackle some discussion on movies, TV and pop culture. And I’m working on getting some guests booked for future episodes, too.

Now, podcasts require a ton of work and attention to detail, especially when you are a one-man crew such as myself. It’s more than just turning on a mic and recording. There’s preparing the show, editing and adding music once it’s done, and so on. So it’s going to take a lot of time to build it up and gain a strong following, but I’m more than willing to put the effort into it. And confident it can eventual evolve into something special. So I hope you continue on the journey with me and help spread the word and share my content. It will be up on iTunes within the next few days, and it is currently available via Spotify.

As for my Detroit Lions coverage for WJR, that’s kind of convoluted so I’ll try to explain as best I can. I was co-hosting the “Inside the Lions” podcast for all of the 2017 season and part of this past preseason with Nate Atkins of Mlive.com. Unfortunately, prior to the start of the season, Nate could no longer do the pod, so I kept it going as best I could during this season, but I wasn’t able to do one every week like in the past (Most recent episode here). And my focus shifted toward contributing reports to the newscasts from Allen Park, in addition to my two weekly features for the “Lions Countdown to Kickoff” pregame show. I may still record some Lions podcasts in the future, but for the time being all my focus will now shift to The Michael Stets Show.

Talk to you all soon.
